The operation, called ‘Operation Trashi-I’ by the Indian Army’s Jammu-based White Knight Corps, started around noon. In a post on X, the White Knight Corps reported that security forces made contact with the terrorists in the Sonnar area, northeast of Chatroo, during a planned search operation as part of ongoing joint counter-terror exercises with the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
“Operations continue with additional forces brought in to strengthen the cordon, supported by close cooperation with civil administration and security agencies,” the army said, praising the troops for their outstanding professionalism and determination while responding to gunfire in tough conditions.
2 to 3 terrorists killed
Officials said that one of the search teams encountered a group of two to three foreign terrorists believed to belong to the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). The terrorists fired indiscriminately and threw grenades in an attempt to breach the cordon. The troops retaliated, and reinforcements from the army, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the local police sent in to further secure the area. There was sporadic firing between both sides for a while, according to officials.
Advanced surveillance tools, including drones and sniffer dogs deployed to accelerate the operation. This marks the third encounter between security forces and terrorists in the Jammu region this year. Earlier encounters occurred in the Kahog and Najote forests in the Billawar area of Kathua district on January 7 and 13.
