Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been protesting for statehood in Ladakh, arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) on Friday. His arrest came few days after young protesters gathered in support turned violent, resulting in four deaths.
Police Arrest Sonam Wangchuk After Violent Protest Leaves 4 Dead
Sources confirmed that Wangchuk moved to Jodhpur Central Jail in Rajasthan. After completing the procedures at Leh airport, he flown on a special flight to Jodhpur. He taken in a high-security convoy to the jail. His medical examination finished. He is held in a high-security ward under 24-hour surveillance with CCTV monitoring.
Days after 4 people killed and over 70 injured in Leh during a peaceful shutdown that escalated, authorities accused Wangchuk of leading protest.
Wangchuk’s hunger strike turn into violence
A day later, the government blamed Wangchuk for the violence. They claimed his “provocative statements” and actions by “politically motivated” groups dissatisfied with ongoing talks between officials and Ladakhi representatives had incited the protesters.
Sonam Wangchuk, known for his activism in Ladakh, started an indefinite hunger strike on September 10, seeking constitutional guarantees, more autonomy, statehood, and Sixth Schedule status for Ladakh.
The government mentioned that discussions were already happening with regional groups such as the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance through a High-Powered Committee (HPC), subcommittees, and informal meetings.
