Three men died and a fourth lost consciousness on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, after inhaling toxic gases inside a septic tank they were cleaning at a private hospital in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, according to the police.
The accident occurred at Ram Krishna Care Hospital in Pachpedi Naka. The victims entered the nearly 20-foot-deep septic tank without proper safety equipment, a police officer reported.

The incident sparked a discussion about the unsafe working conditions for sanitary workers. In response, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai announced that the government would issue orders stating that entering sewers without permission from the local authority or registered institutions will lead to legal action.
The deceased were identified as Anmol Manjhi (25), Govind Sendre (35), and Satyam Kumar (22), all from Simran City. Meanwhile, the condition of another worker remains critical as he continues to receive treatment.
Safety concerns arise
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeep Patel told that the first victim entered the septic tank on the contractor’s orders and lost consciousness. “The other two followed when they went inside to look for their co-worker. A little later, a fourth worker, who was tied to a rope, also fell unconscious but was pulled out,” he explained. The Raipur police were in the process of filing the FIR on Wednesday evening, March 18, 2026.
