In a landmark event, the United States inaugurated its much-anticipated consulate in Bengaluru on Friday, marking a major milestone in the city’s global integration. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and U.S. Ambassador Eric Garcetti jointly presided over the ceremony, drawing attention to the critical role the consulate will play in providing visa-related services to residents of Bengaluru, who were earlier required to travel to either Chennai or Hyderabad for such requirements.
The consulate, housed temporarily at JW Marriott Hotel, Vittal Mallya Road, will in the future have a permanent building. The construction is a step towards strengthening further the relationship that India shares with the United States and recognizes the importance of the city as an international center.
A significant mark for Bengaluru as United States launches its consulate
Speaking at the event, Jaishankar underlined the importance of Bengaluru on the international stage. He said the city deserved a permanent U.S. diplomatic presence. With a bit of humor, he added, “You get Bengaluru done, and I’ll get you Los Angeles done,” referring to a future consulate in Ambassador Garcetti’s hometown.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar termed it a defining moment for the state while BJP MP Tejasvi Surya highlighted that this consulate would significantly facilitate travel to the U.S. for residents of Bengaluru, especially students and professionals.
Ambasoder Garcetti highlighted that the consulate represents an extension of the U.S. diplomatic presence in India, reiterating America’s commitment to Bengaluru’s growth. Drawing a parallel, he went on to say, “If Bengaluru is India’s Silicon Valley, then Silicon Valley is America’s Bengaluru.”
While visa services are not yet operational, Garcetti assured that they would be introduced soon, which would benefit students, tourists, and business travelers. He expressed optimism about strengthening connections between the two nations, saying, “We want to see more tourists, students, and business leaders traveling between our countries.”
This new consulate will not only process visas but also represent a step in increased cooperation between India and the United States, thereby strengthening Bengaluru’s position as a global hub.
