The Uttar Pradesh government has made it clear that Aadhaar cards not accepted as proof of date of birth for official purposes. This decision follows reports of widespread misuse of Aadhaar details to obtain birth certificates, especially in cases of delayed or suspicious registrations.
Aadhaar will not used as Date of birth proof
In Uttar Pradesh, the Planning Department told all departments that Aadhaar cannot be considered a birth certificate, as it not include any birth-related document. Amit Singh Bansal, Special Secretary in the Planning Department, issued this order after receiving communication from the UIDAI’s regional office in Lucknow on October 31, 2025.
The official notice said that the letter from the Deputy Director at UIDAI, Regional Office, Lucknow, clarifies that the card is not a valid proof of date of birth. However, many state government departments still accept it as a document for birth dates.
UP Planning department will standardize documentation
This directive aims to standardise documentation across departments and ensure that birth registrations supported only by valid civil records. Departments must immediately stop accepting Aadhaar to confirm the date of birth in any form.
In Maharashtra, the Revenue Department has taken further action by announcing that all delayed birth certificates issued only on Aadhaar after the Births and Deaths Registration (Amendment) Act, 2023, will cancelled.
