A partially constructed two-story building at the Kannauj railway station in Uttar Pradesh crumbled on Friday and trapped workers underneath the rubble. The construction formed part of the beautification works at the railway station.
About 35 workers were at the site when the shuttering of the roof suddenly gave way. Rescue teams, including railway, police, and administrative personnel, have managed to save 23 workers up to now. Efforts are going on to find out others who are still trapped under the debris.
Under-construction shuttering of the roof seems to have collapsed led to the tragedy,” Shubhrant Kumar Shukla, the District Magistrate, said as he confirmed initial reports. The priority is getting the trapped laborers out alive as soon as possible, he pointed out.
Relief Measures Available
The state government announced compensation for the injured. Serious injuries will receive Rs 50,000 and minor injuries Rs 5,000. Northeastern Railway has assured the public that relief work is being done on a war footing.
Lucknow has now witnessed the involvement of specialized rescue teams from the State Disaster Relief Force in rescuing people. Heavy machinery and equipment are being used to clear debris to reach trapped individuals.
The safety measures should be more stringent at construction sites, especially for big projects involving public infrastructure.
