According to a report, Bengaluru police have arrested Nikita Singhania, estranged wife of Atul Subhash, her mother Nisha, and brother Anurag. After the techie’s saddening life-taking tragedy, Nitika’s family is questioned and arrested. The arrests come days after Atul’s tragic death, where he accused Nikita and her family of harassment and extortion.
Nikita was apprehended in Gurugram and her mother and brother were apprehended in Prayagraj. The trio was brought to Bengaluru late at night and presented before the court, which remanded them to 14-day custody. Police stated that Nikita’s uncle, Sushil Singhania, also an accused in the matter, is still at large.
Wife and family of Atul Subhash accused of harassment
The arrest took place after public outcry related to Atul’s death and the sensational revelations contained in his 24-page suicide note and 80-minute video. The techie, aged 34, originally from Samastipur, Bihar, was spotted dead at his home in Bengaluru at the beginning of this week. His note, which began “justice is due” on every page, blamed Nikita and her relatives for systematic abuse.
Atul married Nikita in 2019 through a matchmaking website and welcomed a son in 2020. However, he alleged that she and her family demanded huge sums of money for business purposes. When he declined, the situation intensified and Nikita departed from home in 2021 with their child. The following year, Atul claimed Nikita filed multiple cases, including dowry harassment and cruelty, against him and his family.
Atul stated in his note that Nikita demanded ₹3 crore to settle the case, while the court ordered him to pay ₹80,000 monthly for maintenance. He also stated frustration with the legal system, that it spurred his harassment. In a deeply emotional statement, Atul said his death would shield his elderly parents and brother from further suffering.
Due to the shocking death of Atul, Atul’s family has instituted a case of abetment against Nikita and also against her family. His death has, again, opened debate on the abuse of the Dowry Prohibition Act and interlinked legislation with the resultant national debate on justice and legal reform.
