Yamuna River Water level Rises To 207.41 Metres in Flooded Delhi

The Yamuna River Water level in Delhi reached its third-highest recorded point at 207.41 meters today. The flood situations are become worse and affects residential and commercial areas. It was measured at 9 PM.

The floods in 1978 and 2023 were the other times when the Yamuna’s water level hit record highs.  Areas such as Yamuna Bazar, Geeta Colony, Majnu Ka Tila, Kashmiri Gate, Garhi Mandu, and Mayur Vihar are currently flooded. Most of these locations consists both commercial and residential buildings.

More than 14,000 people have been evacuated. Officials said that rescue efforts are ongoing. Relief camps have been set up at ITO, Mayur Vihar, and Geeta Colony.

Traffic on Outer Ring Road has been affected. The stretch from ITO toward Ring Road is no longer accessible due to floodwater. Vasudev Ghat, Monastery Market, and the Old Delhi Railway Bridge have also been closed.

Floodwater from the Yamuna started to enter Nigambodh Ghat, Delhi’s oldest and busiest cremation ground. This could disrupt operations if the water level continues to rise, officials reported today.  “As of now, it has not been shut down, but if the floodwater rises, it may closed temporarily,” a municipal officer said.

Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrages Release Water, Rise levels

The rising Yamuna River Water level is mainly due to high volumes of water released from Wazirabad and Hathnikund barrages every hour. The forecast predicts further increases in the water level, according to a Central Flood Control Room officer. Officials mentioned that the North, North East, Shahdara, East, Central, and South East districts of the national capital are at risk of flooding.
