Commonwealth demands Uganda to instantly release opposition politician Kizza Besigye

Recently, Commonwealth Secretary-General issue statement today and demands for the release of Ugandan opposition leaders Dr. Kizza Besigye, Eron Kiiza and Haji Obeid Lutale. Commonwealth demands Uganda for instant release and shows concern over Uganda’s commitment to law rule and human rights.  Uganda, much valued and long standing members of Commonwealth commits to Commonwealth Charter.  It holds values of human rights, the rule of law, and good governance, as per the statement.

Commonwealth demands Uganda for release of Kizza Besigye

Scotland state, “We are saddened and deeply troubled by detention of Dr. Kizza.  It show order of Supreme Court of Uganda’s ruling on 31 January 2025, and principles of democracy, rule of law and human rights.  Dr. Besigye, with Lutale and Kiiza, has detained despite a ruling by Uganda’s Supreme Court on his release order.   They were abducted on 16 November 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, a move that spark widespread condemnation because of its blatant disregard for both the court’s orders and justice principles.

Commonwealth shows concerns for Besigye’s health, as per reports.  Scotland state, ” I am aware of reports about him and urge authorities to give him best possible healthcare.

Commonwealth engages with Government

Scotland reiterated the commitment over Commonwealth demands Uganda.  It supports the resolution and urges the Ugandan government, regional stakeholders, and opposition leaders to engage in it.  Commonwealth are ready to support and engage the Government of Uganda and all parties, include stakeholders, and opposition leaders.  “They are ready to work towards the resolution that protects constitutional sovereignty of country, she said.”

Scotland expressed hope for a return of politician, and reflects on historical relationship with the Commonwealth.  “The Commonwealth has relationship on basis of trust with Uganda.” It looks forward to the return of a democratic and engaging political environment with the Commonwealth, she added
