Jana Nayagan: The final verdict
The Madras High Court has approved the petition from the makers of Jana Nayagan and ordered the Central Board of Film Certification to issue a ‘UA’ certificate immediately. The court rejected the letter from the CBFC chairperson that referred the film to a review committee, stating that the order was beyond their authority.
The court timeline
In its ruling, the court indicated that it was clear from the records that the complainant’s concerns seemed to be an after thought. The court warned that considering such complaints could lead to a harmful trend.
The court also noted that the chairperson’s letter, posted on January 6, was beyond their power. It mentioned that once the changes suggested by the committee implemented, the certificate would automatically follow.
The order explained that the chairperson acted outside their authority since the power to send the film for review was given up after the chairperson, on behalf of the committee already said that a UA certificate granted, subject to cuts. The makers of Jana Nayagan expected to announce a new release date for the film soon.
