Delhi Court Orders Legal Aid for Celina Jaitly’s Detained Brother in UAE

After a chamber hearing, the Delhi Court issued new orders in the plea filed by actor Celina Jaitly. She is seeking help for her brother, former Indian Army officer Major Vikrant Kumar Jaitly (retd), who detained in the UAE.

Justice Sachin Datta noted that Major Jaitly continues to receive consular access, as required by earlier orders. During the hearing, Celina Jaitly asked for arrangements to find a local lawyer or law firm to provide effective legal representation for her brother.

The Court accepted her request and directed the Indian Consulate to provide a list of locally accredited lawyers or law firms that could represent the detained person; this will depend on his choice. The Court explained that the costs for hiring any lawyer or law firm have the responsibility of the detained person or his family, and this condition clearly shared with him.

Next hearing will schedule on 22 January

Justice Datta also mentioned that if any lawyer or law firm willing to waive their fees, that information also given to Major Jaitly, allowing him to make an informed decision. The specific names of any lawyers or law firms communicated to him. The matter set for further hearing on January 22.

The Delhi Court directed the Centre, through the Ministry of External Affairs, to help with communication between Celina Jaitly and her brother, who detained in the UAE for over a year. Jaitly had asked the Court for effective legal assistance, as well as regular updates on her brother’s well-being and legal status.

The Court also ordered a nodal officer to appointed and directed regular updates to shared with the family. It also ensured ongoing consular access and facilitated communication between the detainee, his sister, and his wife.
