Delhi High Court order Newslaundry to Remove Content on TV Today
The Court pointed out that some statements in the content were obviously disparaging. It noted that keeping these online could harm the reputation of TV Today Network. The Court ordered the removal of content, including videos that described certain programs of TV Today using inappropriate terms like “shit.”
The case began with a lawsuit filed by TV Today in October 2021, claiming copyright infringement, defamation, and disparagement by Newslaundry. TV Today argued that certain videos and articles published by Newslaundry contained false and harmful statements about its channels, anchors, and management. Newslaundry has argued that its content is a form of criticism and satire protected by free speech.
How does Newslaundry respond?
Earlier, a single-judge bench of the Delhi High Court did not grant interim relief in favor of TV Today. Following this, both parties appealed the decision. TV Today contested the denial of interim relief, while Newslaundry questioned some of the comments made in the order, including the finding that a prima facie case was established.
During earlier hearings in January 2025, the Division Bench noted the language used in the contested content. The Court first showed concern but later clarified that it did not plan to take action against the journalist involved. It said that the remarks made during the hearing should not be regarded as final conclusions.
