Hours after a video surfaced showing DGP Ramachandra Rao, Director General of Police (Civil Rights Enforcement), behaving inappropriately, the State Government suspended him due to allegations of obscene conduct.
Karnataka Govt Suspends DGP Ramachandra Rao
An order issued late on Monday, January 19, 2026, stated that Mr Rao acted in a way that was not suitable for a government servant and embarrassed the government.
The order cites a clear violation of Rule 3 of the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, 1968. His suspension enforced under Rule 3(1)(a) of the All India Service (Discipline & Appeal) Rules, 1969, while an inquiry is ongoing.
Already Gold smuggling case against him
DGP Ramachandra Rao has prohibited from leaving his headquarters without prior approval and will receive a subsistence allowance as per the rules. He was already under investigation in a gold smuggling case involving his stepdaughter and is facing controversy again after a video of him behaving inappropriately with a woman in his office came to light. Two audio recordings also released in which Mr Rao heard talking with a woman.
