The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has dismantled a gold smuggling and illegal melting operation in Delhi and Kolkata. The Ministry of Finance reported that the operation resulted in the seizure of gold, silver, and Indian currency worth over 14 crore rupees, along with the arrest of six people.
DRI bust gold smuggling racket in Kolkata and Delhi
They noted that more than 8 kilograms of gold valued at over 13 crore rupees, seven kilograms of silver worth over 19 lakh rupees, and Indian currency exceeding 51 lakh rupees confiscated during the operation.
The Ministry said that DRI officers stopped a passenger arriving from Kolkata by train at New Delhi Railway Station. This passenger carried foreign-marked gold aim for delivery to someone outside the station.
Illegal Gold Melting Racket Traced
Based on the information gathered, follow-up searches took place in Delhi, revealing an illegal gold melting facility used for altering foreign-origin gold before it sold in the local bullion market. The investigation led to Kolkata, where investigators tracked down the leader of the syndicate at another illegal melting unit, along with additional defaced gold.
