Government Frees Ladakh Activist Sonam Wangchuk After Six Months in Jail

Recently, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) release the Sonam Wangchuk after six months in jail. It mark the step towards reducing tensions in Ladakh.

The central government orders the Sonam Wangchuk’s unconditional release by using powers under the NSA. He is the famous Ladakhi activist, known for his hunger strikes and environmental campaigns calling for autonomy for the union territory. He detained during protests over land rights, jobs, and constitutional protections.

Commitment to peace and stakeholder engagement 

The Ministry stressed its commitment to creating an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh to allow for constructive discussions with all stakeholders. Officials said that Sonam Wangchuk release supports this aim, showing responsiveness to local needs while ensuring security. This action follows ongoing protests led by Wangchuk and organizations like the Leh Apex Body, who sought protection against demographic changes and a status similar to statehood.
