Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has turned himself in at Tihar Jail after the Delhi HC rejected his last attempt to avoid imprisonment in a cheque bounce case. The court had instructed Yadav to report to authorities because he failed to make payments to a complainant.
Rajpal Yadav Surrenders to Tihar Jail
On Thursday, Senior Advocate Abhijat, who represents Yadav, asked for a last-minute reprieve. He claimed that a payment of ₹25 lakh (about £25,000) made immediately, with a repayment plan for the rest of the amount also loosely outlined.
However, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma rejected this request. She pointed out that Yadav should have surrendered the previous day. She noted that further discussions from the court would only occur after he complied with this order. In her comments, Justice Sharma stressed the need to respect legal directives.
Court provide no VIP treatment to Yadav
The actor convicted by a sessions court in May 2024 and sentenced to six months in jail for his role in cheque bounce cases. However, the High Court suspended this sentence after Yadav’s lawyer assured the court that Rajpal Yadav would settle his debts with Murli Projects Private Limited. The court eventually found that Yadav did not meet any of the promises made and noted that his claims of document errors were not convincing.
Yadav had asked for extensions to pay off his debts, but the court found no reason for the delays. Earlier, Yadav suggested making payments in two phases: an initial sum of ₹40 lakh by December 16, 2025, followed by ₹2.1 crore by January 15 this year. As the court pointed out, he did not meet any of these commitments. The High Court stressed the legal principle that no special treatment granted based on a person’s status or background. It reaffirmed that equality under the law upheld.
