Does a simple movie outing, meant to provide a break and some relief, end up costing you too much? A small tub of popcorn costs over Rs 500 and Supreme Court warns cinema. Add caramel or cheese, and it goes over Rs 700. A cold drink that costs Rs 50 outside sold for Rs 400 plus taxes. Even a half-litre water bottle costs Rs 100 at the theatre café. After spending anywhere from Rs 400 to Rs 1,200 on tickets, doesn’t that take away some of the enjoyment?
Multiplexes criticized for their high prices. Yet, despite public outcry and viral posts questioning the cost of basic items like water, nothing has changed in these movie theaters.
Supreme Court warn cinema
In a strong statement reflecting the frustrations of many Indian moviegoers, the Supreme Court of India on Monday pointed out the high prices at multiplexes. They warned that unchecked prices could drive audiences away and leave cinemas empty.
The Supreme Court bench, including Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, didn’t hold back during a hearing about petitions challenging the Karnataka government’s attempts to limit film ticket prices. They highlighted how basic refreshments, like water bottles and coffee, priced far too high.
Water bottle price for Rs 100, coffee for Rs 700
“You charge Rs 100 for a water bottle and Rs 700 for coffee,” Justice Nath said, according to Live Law. This comment came during discussions in the case Multiplex Association of India and Another vs The Karnataka State Film Chamber of Commerce and Others.
In this case, multiplex owners are contesting a Karnataka High Court order that supports the state government’s decision to limit movie tickets to Rs 200. The Karnataka government’s move aims to make films more affordable amid rising costs.
