Following the Supreme Court’s big order, the Delhi government said it’s going to make sure its timely implementation.
The bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan is hearing the matter after listening to a news file on the rising incidents of stray dog attacks. The court said it’s going to pay attention to arguments only from the Centre, and no petitions from dog lovers or any other party heard in this situation.
Justice Pardiwala Urges Immediate Relocation of Stray Dogs
“We aren’t doing this for us, it’s for the public welfare. So, no sentiments of any nature should involved. Action need to taken at the earliest,” Justice Pardiwala said. “Pick up dogs from all localities and shift them to shelters. For the time being, forget the rules,” he said.
When Justice Pardiwala sought Solicitor General Tushar Mehta’s opinion on the problem, he advised that a site in Delhi had been identified for moving stray dogs, but the plan stalled after animal rights activists acquired a order from Supreme Court.
“All those animal activists, will they able to carry back the ones who’ve fallen prey to rabies? We need to make streets in reality free of stray dogs,” the bench said, including that it might not permit any adoption of stray dogs either.
