Attack on Delhi CM Rekha Gupta at Public Meet, Accused Arrested

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta assaulted at a public hearing at her house early today morning. An assailant, believed to be in his 40s, came up to the Chief Minister at a ‘Jansunwai’ and assaulted her. The security officials of the Chief Minister caught the assailant on the spot and he is currently interrogated.

Senior BJP leaders and senior Delhi Police officers have hurried to her house to seal the area. Initial inputs show the attacker named as Rajesh Sakriya, who is native to Rajkot in Gujarat. His mother, Bhanu, has said Rajesh was an animal lover and was angry over the recent order of the Supreme Court to catch stray dogs in Delhi NCR and relocate them to shelters, sources added.

To help resolve the concerns of the public, the CM has a ‘Jansunwai’ meeting at her residence weekly. BJP senior leader Harish Khurana said, “There was one individual at the meeting who attacked the Chief Minister. Currently, doctors are treating the Chief Minister. We are against the attack. It must be probed if this was attack driven by political reasons.”

Political sparks occurs after attack on CM

Witnesses have said that the attacker arrived with some documents and went to the Chief Minister. He was conversing with her and attacked her unexpectedly.

The BJP has said it believes there was a political conspiracy behind the attack. Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that enemies cannot accept the Chief Minister’s work on the ground and an investigation is underway to identify the mind behind the attacker.

AAP opposition leader and former Chief Minister Atishi has criticized the attack and said that there is no space for violence in a democracy. “Attack on Delhi CM Rekha Gupta is extremely condemnable. There is space for protest and disagreement in a democracy, but no space for violence. Hoping the Chief Minister is safe,” Ms Atishi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, said.
