Congress-DMK Alliance Talks Progress Ahead of Puducherry Election Deadline

The Congress and DMK agreed on Sunday to share seats in the double digits for the 30-member Puducherry Assembly, which will hold elections on April 9. Congress candidates may run in 15 or 16 seats. However, Congress has not yet officially confirmed this arrangement.

Congress-DMK Alliance Talks Progress

The DMK is likely to consider the interests of allies, like VCK, from its share of seats, sources told The Hindu. They will sign the agreement soon so candidates can file their nominations before the March 23 deadline.

The two parties have struggled to reach a decision on who will lead the alliance in the Union Territory. Once again, Congress veteran and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram stepped in and met DMK leader and Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin on Sunday to resolve the differences.

Focus on Puducherry Elections

According to sources, Stalin emphasized that the arrangements made for Tamil Nadu should also apply to Puducherry. He expressed concern that if anything went wrong in Puducherry, it would have serious consequences for Tamil Nadu.

Mr. Stalin was not pleased with how Girish Chodankar, AICC in charge of party affairs and head of the seat-sharing committee, managed the discussions.
