The Maharashtra Assembly polls have warmed up, with the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance and Congress’s Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition locked in a battle. Star campaigners from both sides are pulling out all stops as the state readies for a single-phase election on November 20 with results expected on November 23.
In the midst of aggressive electioneering, a recent election address by the Congress party youth leader Kanhaiya Kumar to this election rally in Nagpur South West drew attention to himself while his words on the “saving religion” narrative went viral on social media as discussed.
Kanhaiya Kumar, during the rally, threw a scathing question to the public: “Is it fair that ordinary citizens bear the burden of these religious wars while politicians’ children go abroad for studies?” He asked voters to question those leaders who were campaigning for religion by asking them if their families would join them to pursue the cause they preach.
The task cannot be only done by the people, but it has to be an overall effort. The people cannot save religion and the children of the leaders go for education at Oxford and Cambridge. Without naming anyone in particular, he criticized the hypocrisy of some politicians and added a hint of humour, saying, “We will save the religion while the Deputy CM’s wife makes Instagram reels.”
