Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan criticized some members for interrupting her speech in the Rajya Sabha. While discussing the Transgender Persons Amendment Bill, she said, “Bacche baith jao” (sit down, child) after being interrupted.
A viral video of her speech showed her questioning the chair, Dr. Dinesh Sharma: “How can you cut my time? I’ll go to the Well.” When she began her speech, Bachchan greeted everyone for Ram Navami, which is celebrated on Thursday. After this, some members spoke from the other side.
Jaya Bachchan Snaps ‘Sit Down, Child’
“If someone starts talking, attention will shift to them. If I am talking, your focus should be on me,” Bachchan told the chair. The clip also showed the chair reprimanding the members and asking them to sit down. He also told Jaya Bachchan to stay on topic since she was running out of time. Bachchan replied that her time is in the chair’s hands.
While Bachchan waited for the other members to stop talking, the chair reminded her again that she was losing time. She responded by saying, “You cannot take my time,” and added that she would go to the Well. The Well is an open area at the center of the parliament in front of the chair.
Opposition MPs talk against her
Opposition MPs opposed the Transgender Persons (Amendment) Bill during the Rajya Sabha session on Wednesday. They demanded that it be either withdrawn or sent to a select committee of Parliament. Jaya Bachchan questioned the urgency of introducing this bill, asking why it “can’t be examined with the depth and care it deserves?”
Bachchan pointed out that transgender individuals were once kept in royal households to protect women. “They were considered safe, but today the government suddenly feels unsafe with their presence,” she said.
