BJP’s Ritu Tawde has become the mayoral candidate for Mumbai. It is the first time in 25 years that someone from a party other than Shiv Sena will hold the position. Tawde, a corporator from Ghatkopar, previously served as the Chairperson of the Education Committee of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Ritu Tawde Win Mumbai Mayor Election
Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Shankar Ghadi, elected as corporator from Ward 5 in the civic election will serve as the Deputy Mayor for 15 months.
The Shiv Sena plans to divide the Deputy Mayor’s term among four of its corporators. Ghadi was one of the leaders who switched to Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde’s side in 2022, which contributed to the collapse of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government.
Shiv Sena Loses Mayor elections
BJP leader Amit Satam announced Ritu Tawde nomination, while Shiv Sena leader Rahul Shewale shared Ghadi’s candidacy. In the elections for the 227-member civic body, the BJP emerged as the largest party with 89 seats, while Shiv Sena secured 29 seats.
The ruling alliance has a total of 118 corporators, surpassing the halfway mark of 114, putting them in a strong position to claim the mayor’s position.
