Nepal’s PM KP Sharma Oli resigns after violent anti-corruption protests by social media ban

Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Monday, officials confirmed. He stepped down amid growing pressure following one of the deadliest crackdowns in years that left 19 people dead and reignited nationwide protests. His resigns expected to lead to intense political discussions as parties rush to form a new government.

The resignation follows angry demonstrations mainly led by young Nepalis. On Tuesday, protesters defied a curfew and took to the streets to express their frustration over corruption, unemployment, and a controversial ban on social media platforms that restricted access to Facebook, YouTube, and X before it lifted.

Police reported that at least 17 people were killed in clashes in Kathmandu on Monday, with two more deaths occurring in Sunsari district. Hundreds injured, including more than 100 police officers. Amnesty International stated that live ammunition fired at demonstrators, while the United Nations has called for a quick and transparent investigation.

Protestors destroy government buildings and properties

Despite the government’s attempts to ease tensions, which included restoring access to social media and announcing all-party talks, anger has continued to rise. Some protesters targeted government buildings and properties owned by politicians, while others accused security forces of “murdering” civilians.

“Around 20 people murdered by the state, that shows the scale of police brutality,” said Yujan Rajbhandari, a 23-year-old student who participated in Monday’s demonstrations.

With people aged 15 to 40 making up nearly 43 % of Nepal’s population, analysts say the protests reflect a generational outcry against corruption, inequality, and lack of opportunity. With this frustration, KP Sharma Oli decide to resigns.
