The winter session of Parliament started today. The session have 15 sittings over 19 days. The Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2:00 PM due to an uproar from the opposition about various issues, including the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. When the Lok Sabha reconvened at 12 noon after the first adjournment, opposition members began shouting slogans again and disrupts the Parliament’s Winter Session.
While this was happening, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Central Excise (Amendment) Bill 2025. This bill aims to impose excise duty on tobacco and related products. Mrs. Sitharaman also presented the Health Security and National Security Cess Bill 2025, which would levy a cess on the production of certain goods like pan masala.
Union Finance Minister introduce Bills in Parliament’s Winter Session
The Minister introduced the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Second Amendment) Bill, 2025, to make changes to the Manipur Goods and Services Tax Act of 2017. Additionally, the House extended the deadline for the Select Committee’s report on the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025, until the last day of the second week of the Winter Session, 2025.
The Lower House also extended the presentation of the report from the Select Committee on the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill, 2025, until the final day of the Winter Session, 2025.
Opposition continue protests
Despite the request to cease protests, opposition members continued their demonstrations, leading the Speaker to adjourn the House until 2:00 PM. Earlier, when the Lok Sabha met at 11 AM, Speaker Om Birla made obituary references and honored those who passed away, including Dharmendra, Col. (Retd.) Sona Ram Choudhary, Prof. Vijay Kumar Malhotra, and Ravi Naik.
The Speaker highlighted their contributions to public life before the House observed a moment of silence in their memory. When the Lok Sabha entered Question Hour, opposition members resumed their sloganeering over issues such as the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
