PM Modi said that the imposition of the Emergency by Congress did not violate the spirit of the Constitution but placed “democracy under arrest.” He called it one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history
In a posts on X at the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, which the Centre has decided to check as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, PM Modi said no Indian would ever forget about how the voice of Parliament become muzzled and attempts made to govern the courts during period.

“On this present day, the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution set apart, essential rights suspended, press freedom was numerous political leaders, social workers, students and ordinary residents jailed. It become as if the Congress government placed democracy under arrest!” the PM tweeted.
Imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the Emergency, lasting for years – from June 1975 to March 1977 – noticed civil liberties suspended and a brutal crackdown on Opposition leaders and the liberty of the click. It got here amid mass protests against Congress governments in several states and the Allahabad High Court ruling Gandhi’s election from Raebareli void.
Violation of Constitution
The PM Modi pointed out how attempts made to manage the courts through the debatable 42nd Constitutional Amendment. The 1976 change brought sweeping adjustments to centralize energy and limit judicial oversight.
“No Indians ever neglect the way wherein the spirit of our Constitution was violated, the voice of Parliament muzzled and attempts made to manage the courts. The 42nd Amendment is a top example of their shenanigans. The marginalised and downtrodden mainly centered, along with their dignity insulted,” he said.
