Bangladesh Bans IPL Broadcasts Over Mustafizur Rahman's Exclusion

IPL broadcasts have been banned in Bangladesh. On Monday, January 5, the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus announced that the broadcasting of IPL matches, IPL-related advertisements, and all IPL-related promotions are temporarily prohibited.

The ban will stay in effect until further notice. The Bangladeshi administration took this action as a response to Mustafizur Rahman’s exclusion from the IPL.

Bangladesh bans IPL Broadcasts

On Monday morning, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of Bangladesh released a statement about the IPL situation. They said, “The Indian Cricket Board has decided to exclude Mustafizur Rahman from the 2026 IPL. The reason for this decision remains unclear. However, this decision regarding Mustafizur has saddened, hurt, and angered the people of Bangladesh. Therefore, all broadcasts of IPL matches and other related content must stop until further notice. This order has been issued for the public’s interest.”

Why did the BCCI drop cricketer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL?

On Saturday, January 3, the Indian board announced that Mustafizur would not be allowed to play in the upcoming IPL. The BCCI made its stance clear amid concerns about including the Bangladeshi pacer in the KKR team during ongoing tensions. Board secretary Devjit Saikia told news agency that the BCCI informed Kolkata Knight Riders they must release Mustafizur Rahman. They can sign another player if they choose, as the board permits.

In Bangladesh, minorities face insecurity due to attacks from fundamentalists and violence under the guise of religion. Some cricket fans are outraged by this situation. This year, the Knight Riders signed one of Bangladesh’s top pacers for a record Rs 9.2 crore. However, Hindu nationalist groups strongly opposed Rahman’s inclusion in the team, leading to controversy.
