Ex-coach Raju Pathak addresses Prithvi Shaw’s behavioral issues, says he didn't have a mother

Prithvi Shaw’s behavioral issues have become a talking point since he went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction. Despite his modest base price of Rs 75 lakh, teams showed no interest in the once-promising batter. This incredible turn of events exposed the uncanny dualism of Shaw’s career. Not only a record-setter in first-class cricket but also an entrant who achieved a Test century in 2018, Shaw has not been able to maintain his level of performance since. Injury, lack of form, as well as issues about his behavior outside the field, have prevented him from joining the national team.

Reasons behind Prithvi Shaw’s behavioral issues

Criticism of Prithvi Shaw’s behavioral issues isn’t new. His off-the-field behaviour has been the subject of criticism, but his past coach Raju Pathak feels the pressure is unwarranted. “He’s just 25, and people want him to act like a 40-year-old. Shaw grew up in difficult circumstances. Losing his mother early and facing financial struggles shaped his perspective. Since he has money and fame, at this “finished” point, it’s normal for him to indulge in it. There’s a lot of players who go through this stage”, said Pathak, who also used to coach Shaw in his younger days.

Although some support him, others have identified fitness as an important impediment for Shaw. Pravin Amre, a former Mumbai coach, feels Shaw’s lack of discipline is holding him back. “Prithvi Shaw’s behavioral issues are tied to his fitness. He needs to lose 10 kilos and get match-ready. His cricketing talent isn’t the problem; it’s his self-discipline. He’s his enemy now. No one can motivate him—he must take charge of his career, said Amre.

Shaw’s fall from grace serves as a cautionary tale. Once hailed as a prodigy, his inability to stay focused has stalled his career. For Shaw to regain his position in cricket, he needs to deal with both his fitness and behavioral issues, as the opportunity may be too late.
