Recent weeks have seen a lot of speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s retirement from international cricket, especially after he had an underwhelming time during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
Even though there has been some criticism against his leadership and batting, which kept India out of the World Test Championship final, Rohit continues to deny having immediate plans to retire. His stint in international cricket may soon reach its end as he might see the end of his career at the end of the Champions Trophy, according to recent reports.
Rohit Sharma’s retirement confirmed, BCCI not content with his performance
Rohit Sharma’s retirement has been doing the rounds of discussion since the final Test match in the Australia series was missed this month. This led to rumors that he had played his last match, but he quickly dismissed the retirement talks, saying, “I’m not going anywhere,” in an interview on Day 2 of the match. However, despite his reassurances, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) seems to be worried about his performance and future prospects, especially ahead of the Champions Trophy.
According to reports, BCCI is not satisfied with the form of Rohit. His last three series saw him just score 164 runs with only an average of 10 runs. A mediocre 31 runs against Australia, an average of mere 6.2, added fire to the fuel. These results have made the selectors question whether it is now time to leave the 37-year-old opening batsman of the Test circuit, especially during the team’s upcoming assignments.
A report from Dainik Jagran also suggests that Rohit is unlikely to travel to England for India’s upcoming five-Test series, which will kick off the new World Test Championship cycle. This aligns with the views of former Australia cricketer Adam Gilchrist, who speculated that the Champions Trophy may indeed be Rohit’s last international tournament.
As the cricketing world waits, it appears Rohit Sharma is nearing retirement with his last possible appearance being that at the grand ICC Champions Trophy.
