Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney has highlighted how serious abdominal injuries can be, even in a sport that’s not typically high contact. The 30-year-old batter suffered a laceration to his spleen after a hard fall while trying to make a catch. He was visibly in pain while clutching his side before leaving the field.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said that Iyer was quickly taken to the hospital for a thorough evaluation. Scans later confirmed that he had a laceration of the spleen, which is a tear that can cause internal bleeding. The statement noted that he is “medically stable and recovering well,” with the team doctor remaining in Sydney to monitor his situation.
What is spleen?
The spleen, although small, plays a key role in the body’s immune system. It is located on the left side of the upper abdomen, tucked just beneath the rib cage. It filters blood, stores red blood cells, and helps the body fight infections.
Dr. Srikantaiah Hiremath, Head of Department and Consultant at Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, explained the importance of this often-overlooked organ. “The spleen is like a silent guardian of the body,” he said. “It filters blood, removes damaged cells, and stores platelets and white blood cells. It is part of the lymphatic system, which is crucial for the body’s immune defense. Even though it is about the size of a fist, its function is vital for keeping the body protected.”
