Apple plans to use Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence model to update Siri, which will launch later this year, the two companies announced Monday.
“After careful evaluation, Apple found that Google’s AI technology offers the best foundation for Apple Foundation Models and is excited about the new experiences it will create for Apple users, both companies said.
Apple and Google signed contract
The two companies noted they have signed a multi-year contract where Apple will use Google’s Gemini model and cloud computing technology for AI features.
This move might help Apple speed up the release of its more advanced, AI-powered Siri voice assistant, which was delayed after being first teased at the company’s 2024 Worldwide Developer Conference. The delay has raised concerns that Apple is falling behind other tech giants in AI development.
Suggests google win in silicon Valley
The agreement shows that Apple is still having difficulty developing a competitive, in-house AI model. However, Wall Street views the news as a positive development for the iPhone maker. Apple is build on enhanced AI features, including the updated Siri, to boost device sales after a few challenging years for the iPhone.
This is also a significant win for Google in the ongoing battle in Silicon Valley to develop the most capable and widely used AI model. Apple has also teamed up with OpenAI to use ChatGPT for some AI features, but the deal announced Monday places Gemini at the center of Apple’s future AI strategy. It was not immediately clear how agreement will affect the integration of ChatGPT into its AI features on iPhone.
“This is what the Street has been waiting for amid concerns about Cupertino’s invisible AI strategy, but we believe this is a positive step for both Apple and Google,” Wedbush tech analyst Dan Ives said in an emailed comment.
