Media reports state that over the past year, all 1.2 million email addresses belonging to Central government employees moved from a system run by the National Informatics Centre to a platform created by Zoho.
A senior official noted that Zoho’s suite also set up to prevent government employees from using open-source applications to create word documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.
1.2 Million Employee migrate emails to Zoho Platform
On October 3, the Union Ministry of Education issued a directive encouraging officials to use the Zoho suite. This is part of the Government of India’s broader goal of shifting the nation from a service-based economy to a product-based one while building a self-reliant ecosystem in technology, hardware, and software solutions.
Although the suite already available, it not adopted by government employees. “It found that many government employees were using open-source tools, which could risk the security of files. We decided to raise awareness and highlight the suite’s features prominently on the internal mail platform,” said the official in discussions with The Hindu.
A leading step towards Swadeshi initiative
It was mentioned that the Zoho Office Suite now part of the NIC mail system. By using Zoho’s built-in office productivity tools, we are making a significant step in the Swadeshi initiative. This supports India’s ability to lead with locally developed innovation, improves digital independence, and ensures data security for a self-reliant future.
Another official pointed out that while the email domain names remain as nic.in or gov.in, the data storage and processing has moved from NIC to Zoho. The private company won the contract in 2023, which lasts for seven years, the official said.
