The highlight of the recently concluded Cybercab event was the appearance of Tesla’s humanoid robot Optimus as it showcased the company’s developments in robotics and autonomous systems. During the said event held at Warner Bros. Studios in California, Tesla launched the Robovan and the Cybercab self-driving robotaxi, but what became the focal point was Optimus.
One of the designs of the humanoid robot by Tesla is for everyday use. The company demonstrated this in a video where the robot picked up a package from the porch and even watered plants. Regarding the robot, Elon Musk said during the presentation that Optimus will walk amongst humans and he even suggested that the robot could walk dogs, mow grass, and even babysit.
Tesla first publicly presented the concept of Optimus during its Artificial Intelligence Day in 2021, and then it showed a prototype in 2022. It has since gone further, and now Optimus can be realized for practical use. The robot would, according to Musk, “be incredibly handy to have in a family household, kind of like a butler to pour drinks at parties and stuff”.
As per Tesla’s CEO, this will be the biggest product ever of any kind. The company will produce millions of units of these robots which will be a fundamental transformation for civilization.”
This is estimated to be between US$20,000 and US$30,000 once mass production hits, putting it within easy reach for the home or even businesses. Tesla’s humanoid robot Optimus closed the event by dancing on stage, performing Daft Punk’s “Robot Rock.” There is no shortage of moving further into the future with such inventions as Optimus and the Cybercab in the midst of legal battles regarding Tesla’s promises of driverless cars.
