The government has expanded free rail travel to a Sena Medal award winners from the armed forces. It aim to honor their service to the country, officials said. Military personnel who receive the Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal, and Vayu Sena Medal for gallantry can now travel for free in First Class, 2nd AC, and chair car on trains.
Free lifelong train travel for Sena Medal awardees
This benefit also includes lifelong free travel for their dependents and a companion, where applicable. The rail concession applies only to those who received these medals for gallantry, not to those recognized for distinguished service.
Only winners of the Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra allowed free rail travel, according to officials. The wartime equivalents of these medals are the Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, and Vir Chakra.
Government issues sanction letters for free travel to eligible
An official letter issued on March 16 states, “A case for granting railway concessions to awardees to travel on Indian Railways discussed with the MoD. After long discussions, the MoD has now issued a government sanction letter for complimentary lifelong travel to the gallantry awardees, their dependents, and one companion.”
The Adjutant General’s branch and Controller General of Defence Accounts finalizing the details for using this facility, and these will be announced soon, the letter added.
