PM Narendra Modi will going to open the new integrated t Guwahati’s New Airport Terminal on December 20. This marks an important step in improving aviation infrastructure in Northeast India.
The new terminal, known as the “Bamboo Orchids Terminal,” is inspired by Assam’s natural heritage. It features designs of strong bamboo, elegant foxtail orchids (kopou phool), and traditional gamosa patterns.
Nature themed design of Guwahati’s New Airport Terminal
This nature-themed design highlights sustainability and cultural identity. Earlier this year, the terminal received the International Architectural Award 2025 in the Transport category.
The facility, which costs about ₹4,000 crore (with reports suggesting the terminal building alone is ₹1,600 crore), will increase the airport’s annual passenger capacity to 13.1 million, a significant rise from the current numbers.
Operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, the terminal provides modern amenities. These include 10 aerobridges, 16 self-baggage drop counters, advanced security systems, and improved retail and dining options.
Boost connections to domestic and international destinations
The Guwahati’s New Airport Terminal aims to establish Guwahati as a key aviation hub for the Northeast. It will enhance connections to domestic and international destinations, especially strengthening ties with Southeast Asia. It will also promote economic growth, tourism, and integration across the region’s eight states.
During the inauguration, PM Modi is expected to unveil an 80-foot statue of Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, the airport’s namesake. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma has confirmed that the terminal is ready. He said that all preparations are complete ahead of the Prime Minister’s two-day visit to the state, which will include the dedication of other key projects.
