Brian Thompson, head of well-known US insurance company UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot outside the Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan Wednesday morning, multiple sources said. The 50-year-old was due to address an investor conference later that day.

He was shot around noon GMT in an incident. Police believe it was an intentional assault. The suspect, wearing a ski mask and cream jacket, fled the scene and remains at large. Officials have stated that the victim did not lose anything.
The investigation is underway as The New York Police Department is studying the scene’s surveillance video footage, but as yet the motive of the suspect cannot be identified. The death of Thompson has cascaded shockwaves across the sector and UnitedHealth Group has postponed its investor conference in the wake of the event.

A prominent leader in US health insurance Thompson had been working at UnitedHealthcare since 2004 and became the CEO in April 2021. Under his leadership, the company cemented its position as the largest private health insurer in the United States.
Last year, Thompson earned $10.2 million in the role. Industry mourns the loss as in a press release, Andrew Witty, CEO of UnitedHealth Group, called it “a medical disaster of a very serious nature.
A spokesperson for Hilton Hotel commented, “We are profoundly moved by the events of this morning, and our most heartfelt wishes are with everyone impacted.” The chief of the insurance company, however, departs on a record of leadership of and in healthcare, as law enforcement strives to bring the perpetrator’ of this high-profile crime, to justice.
