India and Canada agreed on Sunday to resume talks on a free trade deal. The prime ministers of both nations met during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. This marks another sign of improving relations between the two countries.
Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed at G20 Summit
India PM Modi and Canadian PM Mark Carney decided to start negotiations on a high-ambition Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), according to a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
Later, the Prime Minister’s Office shared on X that PM Modi had a productive meeting with PM Carney. The two leaders noted the strong progress in their relationship and agreed to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, technology, innovation, energy, education, defence, and space.
About CEPA
The proposed agreement aims to double bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030. India and Canada confirmed their longstanding partnership in civil nuclear energy and acknowledged ongoing discussions about expanding cooperation, including securing long-term uranium supply agreements
In addition to CEPA, the leaders welcomed the formation of the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership. This initiative will strengthen trilateral cooperation in critical technologies, nuclear energy, supply chain diversification, and AI.
The two prime ministers also talked about collaborating in trade and investment, defence, education, space, science and technology, and energy. Prime Minister Carney expressed support for India hosting the AI Summit in February 2026.
