Modi Heads to Johannesburg for Historic G20 Summit in Africa

On Friday , PM Modi left starts a three-day visit to South Africa to attend the first G20 Summit held on the continent. While in Johannesburg, the PM will also participate in the 6th IBSA Summit.

“I will share India’s views at the Summit based on our vision of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ and ‘One earth, One Family and One future’,” Modi stated before his departure. 

PM Modi join the fourth historic G20 Summit in South Africa

This summit marks the fourth consecutive meeting hosted by the Global South, following Indonesia, India, and Brazil. Before South Africa, Brazil (2024), India (2023), and Indonesia (2022) held the G20 presidencies. 

PM Modi will be at the summit from November 21 to 23. This is a significant moment as it is the first G20 summit taking place in Africa. It will be PM Modi’s fourth official visit to South Africa, following his bilateral trip in 2016 and his attendance at the two BRICS summits in 2018 and 2023. 

What is on the agenda? 

This year’s G20 Summit theme is ‘Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability’. South Africa has continued this theme from the previous Summits held in New Delhi, India, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as the Prime Minister noted in his statement.  The G20 includes major economies that make up 85% of global GDP and 75% of international trade.
