‘Not our friend’ – Donald Trump’s statements about Syria make waves on internet

'Not our friend' - Donald Trump's statements about Syria make waves on internet

President-elect Donald Trump has re-opened discussions of US foreign policy strategies by his aggressive position towards the Syrian crisis. In a just-posted social media (social platform) post, Truth Social, Trump announced that the US should not get involved in the present conflict.

Syria is an utter mess but [it is] not our ally. The US should have no involvement i.e., . This is not our fight. Let it play out. Do not get involved!” he wrote.

Russia’s Role Under Scrutiny, Trump’s Statements on Syria Go Viral

Trump’s statements about Syria also point to the decline of Russia’s power in the area. He hypothesized that because Russia, loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, has become deeply involved in the war against Ukraine, it cannot oversee the Syrian struggle adequately.

Russia seems incapable of stopping this literal march through Syria, a country they have protected for years“, he commented. He went on to suggest that Russia’s pullout from Syria might be a good thing too, for the fact that Russia, thus far, has achieved little if anything at all from Syria’s campaign there.

U. S. Troop Presence Questioned

Trump’s pronouncements highlight his longstanding disapproval of U.S. military activity in Syria. An estimated 900 U.S. troops are now on location in northeastern Syria, supporting a Kurdish-led coalition to prevent new forms of Islamic State fighters from reappearing. Trump argued against this presence, reiterating his belief that Syria’s turmoil is not America’s fight.

This is not the first time Trump has voiced such views. During his first term in 2018, he announced plans to withdraw U.S. forces, citing the near defeat of Islamic State. He delayed the decision, however, after warnings from colleagues that a withdrawal would give Iran and Russia’s reach in the area too much power.

A New Direction for U.S. Policy?

Trump’s remarks on Syria indicate a potential shift in U.S. foreign policy under his leadership. It is not known whether or not this hands-off strategy will be embraced by politicians and partners. For the moment, his position has rekindled discussions about US involvement in international warfare and the endgame strategy in the Middle East.
