Pakistan is trying to resolve the ongoing war between allies in the Middle East. The country work as main mediator for peace between Iran and its rivals, the United States and Israel. Islamabad is leveraging its military chief’s connections to Tehran and its positive relationship with US President Donald Trump.
The report mentioned that Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, spoke with US President Donald Trump on Sunday. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif talked with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday. Their conversation happened just as Trump announced he will delay his threat to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants.
Pakistan work as mediator between US and Iran
The American president claimed he chose to pause his threat following “very good and productive” talks with Tehran to end the war, a statement Iran has denied. However, Tehran acknowledged that some regional countries involved in mediation efforts.
“Over the past few days, messages received through certain friendly countries conveying the US request for negotiations to end the war. Appropriate responses given to those initiatives in line with the country’s fundamental positions,” said Esmaeil Baqaei, spokesperson for the foreign ministry, in an interview with state media IRNA.
What Efforts PAK made?
A senior Pakistani officials engaged in back-channel discussions between Tehran and Team Trump’s envoys, Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Pakistan’s PM Sharif also spoken to Pezeshkian several times since the war began.
“While updating the Iranian president on Pakistan’s leadership’s diplomatic outreach efforts, the prime minister assured the Iranian leadership that Pakistan would keep playing a constructive role in facilitating peace,” Pakistan said in a summary of their conversation on Monday.
