PM Modi not address UN Session in New York, Jaishankar Expected to Represent India

PM Modi will not speak at the General Debate during this month’s annual high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly. The 80th session of the UN General Assembly begin on September 9. The high-level General Debate is scheduled for September 23-29, starting with Brazil as the traditional first speaker, followed by the US.

Absence of PM Modi in UN Session

US President Donald Trump will address world leaders from the UNGA podium on September 23. This will be his first address to the UN session during his second term in the White House. The revised list of speakers for the high-level General Debate of the 80th session, released on Friday, shows that India will be represented by a minister. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will speak on September 27.

Previously, a provisional list from July indicated that PM Modi set to address the General Debate on September 26. The heads of government from Israel, China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are also scheduled to speak on September 26.

High level Session Promote peace, development and human rights

PM Modi visited the US in February for a bilateral meeting with Trump at the White House. Trump has imposed tariffs totaling 50 % on India, including 25 % on Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil.

The UNGA list of speakers for the General Debate is provisional, and changes to schedules and speakers may occur before the high-level week begins. The list will be updated as needed.

The high-level session is considered the busiest diplomatic season of the year at the United Nations Headquarters and opens every September. This year’s session takes place against the backdrop of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war and the Ukraine conflict. The theme for the 80th session is “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development, and human rights.”
