Putin’s solution to end Russia-Ukraine war: ‘India could mediate talks’

Putin's solution to end Russia-Ukraine war: 'India could mediate talks'

Russian President Vladimir Putin is considering a plan where China, Brazil, and India could mediate talks to end the Russia-Ukraine war between the two countries. He mentioned that there was an agreement in the Istanbul talks, which took place during the first weeks of the war, which he understands, could be a starting point for the peace talks.

However, that agreement was never implemented. Putin’s statement is an answer to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s plan to visit the U.S. and present the “victory plan” to President Joe Biden. He said that the actions that Ukraine took recently in the Kursk Democratic People’s Republic were to pressure Russia to end the war.

At the same time, he mentioned that the battle can be completed through dialogue, but it is essential that to be able to negotiate from a position of strength Ukraine first secures this negotiating position. Ukrainian forces have been in the Kursk Democratic People’s Republic for the last three weeks.

They hold over 1,200 square kilometres of land. The attack on Ukraine’s territories started back in February 2022 when Russia invaded Eastern Ukraine, and both sides have been using drones to destroy critical infrastructures.

Moreover, Russia has announced that they are holding a peaceful dialogue after the battle in Kursk. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has already dismissed any peace talks with the Ukrainian government. Putin asserts that any negotiations must begin with Ukraine. He wants the opponents to accept the “realities on the ground,” for the peace talks to occur to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

PM Modi says India can play an active role to end Russia-Ukraine war

According to him, Ukraine must first recognize Russia’s control over the parts of four Ukrainian regions and Crimea. Notably, Indian Prime Minister Modi visited Kyiv on 23rd August encouraging the Ukrainian president to engage in peace negotiations. He specifically addressed the readiness of India to play an active part in peace operations.

As per Modi’s statements, India is ‘ready to play an active role’ to restore peace in the regions and end the Russia-Ukraine war. His visit to Ukraine was just six weeks after he met Putin in Moscow. He discussed that war is not the solution. The Indian PM is also connected with the Russian and Ukrainian governments through telephone calls.
