At least 20 people killed and dozens injured with Suicide attack in Damascus Church on Sunday, June 22. The explosion in Dweil’a on the outskirts of Damascus befell as people praying in the Mar Elias Church. SANA, citing the Health Ministry, said that at least 15 others wounded. Britain based conflict monitor the Syrian Observatory for People Rights says 30 peoples injured and killed in attack. Some local media said that childrens have been among the casualties.
Suicide attack in Damascus Church
The attack occurs first time in Syria in years and comes as Damascus, under its de facto Islamist rule to get the support of people. As President Ahmad al-Sharaa struggles to exert authority across the United States of America, there have been concerns about the presence of sleeper cells of extremist businesses in the conflict-torn country.
No agency right away claimed obligation Sunday. However, the Syrian Interior Ministry said an extremist from the Islamic State organization entered the church and fired at the people there before detonating himself with an explosives vest, echoing a few witness memories.
Witness Saw Attackers Attack on church
A witness who recognized himself as Rawad informed to media that he saw the attacker, who was followed by others who fled as he was driving near the church.
“He was shooting at the church. He then went into the church and blew himself up,” he said. Syrian Information Minister Hamza Mostafa condemned the Suicide attack in Damascus Church, calling it a terrorist attack.
“This cowardly act is going against the civic values that bring us together,” he said. “We will back off from our commitment to same citizenship, and we also verify the state’s pledge to exert all its efforts to fight legal companies and to protects society from all attacks threatening its protection.”
