Savitha Shanmugasundaram, a 21-year-old student of Indian origin at the University of Texas, was one of three people killed in a mass shooting in Austin on Sunday. The attack took place on West Sixth Street. The suspected gunman was shot dead, bringing the total number of fatalities to four.
The FBI is investigating the incident as a possible terror attack. They suspect the shooting linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran.
Indian origin Student Killed in Texas shooting
Shanmugasundaram set to graduate in May with dual degrees in Management Information Systems and Economics. She died when a gunman opened fire outside Buford’s Bar, a popular spot near the university. The Texas Tribune reported that at least 14 people injured, with some still in critical condition.
FBI suspects Iran Link in it
The shooting happened outside the bar in Austin. Besides Shanmugasundaram, the other victims identified as Ryder Harrington and Jorge Pederson.
Authorities named the shooter as NdigaDiagne, a 53-year-old naturalized American citizen born in Senegal. The AP reported that Diagne entered the U.S. in 2000 on a tourist visa. He became a legal permanent resident in 2006 through marriage to a U.S. citizen and naturalized in 2013.
The suspect’s motive remains unclear. However, Alex Doran, acting special agent in charge of the FBI in San Antonio quoted by the AP as saying there were “indicators” of a “potential nexus to terrorism.”
