Trump Warns of 50% Tariff and Canadian Jet Decertification Amid Trade Dispute

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 50 % tariff on all aircraft sold into the United States from Canada. This move escalates a trade dispute over aircraft certification and targets Canadian planemaker Bombardier.

Trump plans to impose 50% tariffs on aircrafts sold from US to Canada

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that the tariff would take effect unless Canada quickly certifies business jets made by US manufacturer Gulfstream Aerospace. He accused Ottawa of wrongly refusing certification for several Gulfstream models.

“Based on the fact that Canada has wrongfully and illegally refused to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 Jets,” Trump wrote, referring to the aircraft as some of the greatest and most advanced planes ever built.

Warns de-certification of Canadian jets

Trump said that the US would respond by decertifying Bombardier aircraft, including its flagship Global Express jets. “We are hereby decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses and all Aircraft made in Canada until Gulfstream, a great American Company, is fully certified,” he remarked.

The US President also claimed that Canada was blocking Gulfstream sales in its domestic market. “Canada is prohibiting the sale of Gulfstream products in Canada through this certification process,” Trump said, adding that Gulfstream should have been approved “many years ago.”
