A community is in mourning following the tragic Walmart bakery oven incident which took place in Halifax. The body of an Indian teengirl, who works at a local Walmart store, was found dead inside the walk-in oven in the bakery section of the same store. The girl was reportedly 19 years old. Her mother, also working at the same store, was left to discover the horrific incident. This senseless tragedy has left the local community dazed, especially the Sikh community since Kaur and her mother were well-known in the community.
Soon after the Walmart bakery oven incident report, Maritime Sikh Society revealed that Kaur’s identity was released in public because she had permitted her family to do so. According to President Harjit Seyan, “the grief is affecting her family and friends.”. Kaur had come to Canada with big dreams of tomorrow. The untimely death has made her loved ones grieve. In return, society has provided counseling sessions to those affected by her loss so that they may not be deserted in such a trying moment.

Kaur and her mother have stayed in Canada for three years now. Her father and brother still stay in India. As the family is in mourning over this awful news, a GoFundMe crowd has been created to raise funds for funeral expenses and to bring her father and brother here to Canada. The campaign had gone well past its goal in no time, a testimony of how the community came out for the Indian teengirl Walmart worker killed in this tragic incident.
The authorities including the Halifax Regional Police, the Labour Department, and the medical examiner are running a wide-scale investigation on the Walmart bakery oven incident. The authorities have also appealed to the public not to fill social media with misinformation about the case as is now the practice. Police say that the officers at Halifax mentioned that a precise timeline to answer all the queries cannot be given right now as the matter is quite complex.
The company released a statement condoning the tragedy. Walmart Canada extended sympathy and support to Kaur’s family while simultaneously ensuring the employees were taken care of, too, as they required their grief counseling whenever possible. It also ensured that the staff was being paid continuously throughout the lockdown of the store. More than the heart-wrenched people of Halifax, support is now aimed at Kaur’s family as they require resources during this hard time.
