Reserve Bank of India announces Bank Holidays for January 2025

The Reserve Bank of India, as the New Year dawns, unveils the final list of Bank Holidays 2025 for January. For this month, there are a total of 13 non-working days, which fall under different heads, such as national holidays, local ones, and second and fourth Saturdays and Sundays. These non-working days will be applicable for public and commercial bank branches, but not for digital banking services.

The holiday calendar begins on January 1, 2025, with New Year’s Day celebrations and state-specific observances, such as Loosong and Namsoong. Banks in Aizawl, Chennai, and Gangtok will remain closed on this particular day as well. Regional closures are also observed in Gangtok and Aizawl on January 2, with continued New Year celebrations.

Republic Day, the month’s prominent national holiday, falls on Sunday, January 26, and will be observed throughout the country. Other significant holidays include Makar Sankranti, which is celebrated on January 14 in a few states, and Sri Guru Gobind Singh’s Birthday, which results in closures in Chandigarh on January 6.

Regional differences are also marked in Bank Holidays 2025. For example, Tamil Nadu marks a series of holidays mid-month, such as Thiruvalluvar Day on January 15 and Uzhavar Thirunal on January 16. Meanwhile, January 23 is a closure in cities such as Kolkata and Bhubaneswar to commemorate Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birthday.

As those branches will continue to be shut on these dates, online banking, mobile banking apps, as well as automated teller machines will be active. Customers may perform transactions smoothly, pay the bills, and operate accounts accordingly.

The Bank Holidays 2025 list set by RBI provides an insight that India is full of diverse cultures and has a mix of national and local observance; for individuals, planning financial transactions according to that date is indispensable.
