The Althan area of Surat experienced tension Saturday afternoon when a mob confronted the police. The police had arrived at the scene of a crime involving an accused in a case of sexual harassment against a minor for a reconstruction.
Man Arrested in Surat for Molesting Minor Girl
The crowd was furious and demanded the accused, Aziz Shaikh. The police already rescued him on Friday after he attacked and taken to the station.
According to the police, a 14-year-old girl from Althan was returning home from her tuition classes on a moped on Friday evening. She allegedly harassed by a 25-year-old man, identified as Aziz Shaikh. Passersby witnessed the incident and restrained Shaikh, assaulting him.
Faces Mob Attacks
One person contacted the police control room, and a police van quickly arrived to rescue Shaikh from the mob and took him inside the vehicle. However, another group showed up, pulled him out of the van, beat him again, and tore his clothes, all in front of the girl’s parents, who had arrived at the scene.
“Shortly after, personnel from the Althan police station arrived, rescued Shaikh again, and brought him to the police station for further action,” police sources said.
As news of the incident spread, a large crowd gathered around the Althan police station, demanding that the police hand over Shaikh. The police refused and urged the crowd to disperse.
