Khokon Das, a Hindu man in Bangladesh who attacked with sharp weapons and set on fire, died today after fighting for his life in a Dhaka hospital, according to his family.
Khokon Das ran a medicine and mobile banking business in his village, located 150 km from Dhaka. The attack occurred as he was returning home after closing his shop on Wednesday. He managed to jump into a pond, which helped extinguish the flames that nearly engulfed his head and face. After this, the attackers fled.
Khokon Das declared died at hospital after Mob attack
Locals initially took him to a nearby hospital, but doctors later decided to transfer him to a larger hospital in Dhaka.
Khokon Das’ wife, Seema Das, told NDTV that she not understand why her husband attacked so violently, as the family had no enemies in the area. “We have no dispute with anyone. We don’t understand why my husband suddenly targeted,” Seema said in Bangla before breaking down outside the hospital in Dhaka.
Khokon Das’ name has now joined a growing list of Hindus in the troubled, Muslim-majority nation who have suffered brutal attacks and murders allegedly for religious reasons.

Seema Das pointed out that the attackers were Muslims and called on the police and the Bangladesh government to assist her family. She mentioned that her husband (Khokon Das) was set on fire after he recognized two of the assailants.
Bangladesh has been experiencing rising violence against minorities, including Hindus, under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. This has caused outrage among people and several human rights organizations worldwide. While officials working with Yunus claim they are protecting minorities, reports from the ground tell a different story.
