Sale of Punjabi girls to Gulf countries spark nationwide outrage

A sale of Punjabi girls to Gulf countries has once again gained nationwide attention and disturbing reports have emerged about nine Indian girls who were taken under the guise of job opportunities to Iraq, Oman, and Qatar. They were exposed to the worst scenarios once they reached the places. Inviting themselves into this nightmare of abuse and exploitation by applying for high-paying jobs, the girls are currently in an unending nightmare.

According to the details, their passports were confiscated from them once they reached the Gulf. They had no means of leaving. These girls, captives to servitude, were subjected to a life full of inhuman treatment: forced labour, agents and employers’ mistreatment, all behind these multi-story buildings prisons.

Sale of Punjabi girls to Gulf countries, many are still stuck there

Hundreds of girls are caught and can’t be freed. A lucky few, who managed to flee and reached Punjab, spoke about the horrific stories that dozens of other girls are trapped and can’t break free. Recently, nine girls were rescued and returned safely to their homeland. However, they said 20 to 25 more are left in Oman only who are exposed to conditions which can hardly be described.

This has surfaced the larger issue of the same human trafficking ring, especially of vulnerable girls from Punjab. Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal who himself is a saviour of over 100 girls rescued in such similar situations, urged the parents to think at least twice before sending their daughters to work in Gulf countries. The new revelations by the survivors bring out the sad fact that girls are being used and sold as slaves several times.

It’s time to act against this unending cycle of Gulf countries selling Punjabi girls so that no more Pennies are sexually molested and exploited.
